UIDAI stands for Unique Identification Authority of India. It is a statutory authority established under the provisions of the Aadhaar Act, 2016 by the Government of India.

UIDAI

UIDAI is responsible for issuing Aadhaar cards, a 12-digit unique identification number, to residents of India based on their biometric and demographic data.

The Aadhaar number serves as a proof of identity and address, and it is used for various purposes such as opening bank accounts, getting a mobile connection, and availing government services.

The aim of UIDAI is to provide a unique identification number to every resident of India, to enable better targeting of welfare schemes, and to improve the efficiency of service delivery.

The UIDAI was established in 2009 with the objective of providing a unique identity to every Indian resident, regardless of their socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or religion.

The Aadhaar project was launched in 2010, and since then, it has become one of the largest identity projects in the world, with over 1.2 billion Aadhaar cards issued as of 2021.

The Aadhaar project has been a game-changer in terms of improving the delivery of government services and reducing fraud and leakages in welfare schemes.

UIDAI has also implemented several measures to safeguard the privacy and security of the Aadhaar holders' personal information, including the use of advanced encryption techniques and strict access controls.

The Aadhaar project has also faced criticism from privacy advocates who have raised concerns about the collection and storage of biometric data, the potential for misuse of Aadhaar information, and the lack of a robust legal framework to protect individuals' privacy.
